The spiral flute has the advantage of optimizing the chip flow. Even long, non-breaking chips are removed easily. This process protects the cutting edges and reduces built-up edges. The cone shape allows the drills to be easily removed from the drilled hole. Each step drill is individually packed in a plastic box. Step drills are available in many sizes with various steps and come in both metric and imperial / fractional sizes. The most common sizes to choose from are 4-12mm in 5 steps or 9 steps, 4-20mm in 9 steps, 4-30mm in 14 steps, 6-38mm in 12 steps, 6-26.75mm in 8 steps, 4-39mm in 13 steps, 6-32mm in 8 steps or 9 steps, 5-28mm in 7 steps, 6-30.5mm in 9 steps, 6-37mm in 12 steps, 6-40mm in 16 steps and 6.5-32.5mm in 12 steps.
